SUE ELLEN (sire X Little Lou De) Dark Bay, TB mare, 15.1 H, 16 years old in 2006 so foaled in 1990. (info from 2006 US Open Polo Ponies program, also owned at that time by Neil Hirsch and played by Gonzalo Pieres, Jr. in the Open series.) Bred, raised and trained by Tommy Wayman, her dam was the great, Little Lou De. She was later owned by John Goodman - Winner BPP of the 2000 Gold Cup, multiple tournament winner. As per Polo, Jan. 2001 pg. 31 – “Sue Ellen, BPP, (2000) USPA Gold Cup – If a horse’s worth is accounted by the total goals of players who have ridden her, Sue Ellen may be just about the best horse ever to play polo. 'There’s been about 80 (or 90) goals play her through the years,’ said Tommy Wayman. Players have included Wayman himself, Owen Rinehart, Carlos Gracida, Memo Gracida, Mike Azzaro, Nachi Heguy, Mariano Aguerre, Eduardo Heguy and Pite Merlos, all rated at 10 goals when they played her. ‘We broke her when she was 2, started playing her at 3 and 4, then I sold her to (John) Goodman late in her 4-year-old year. She probably contributed more to the Isla Carrollsuccess than any other horse over there. ‘He described her as ‘very quiet, very relaxed, laid back. One of those kind of horses that all the movement is easy for her. Her lateral movement is incredible. She has a fantastic mouth. She’s not a big bruiser type horse. She won’t run through a big, hard bump. She’s more of a finesse horse, I’ll put it that way. Very handy, very, very handy.’ Sue Ellen stands a little over 15.1 hands. Wayman said she comes from an illustrious family of polo ponies. ‘Sue Ellen’s mother won the Best Playing Pony in the Open and so did her grandmother. Her mother’s name was Little Ludie and her grandmother’s name was Ludie. Ludie won it in the 70s and Little Ludie won it in the 80s. My father and I have had that particular bloodline since the 1950s. She’s only had one owner besides me. Now two, Mariano Aguerre just bought her.’ Wayman’s son Toby plays Sue Ellen’s sister, Seashell, age 7.” As per same issue, Polo, Jan. 2001, pg. 38, Joey Casey remarks: ‘John Goodman’s Sue Ellen is one of the best. She has great conformation, she can play two chukkers in a game and she does everything with ease. She is good enough to get along with almost anyone, and many good players have played her. Sue Ellen is similar to another great horse from years ago, owned by the late John Oxley, called Cat-A-Joy. She had the same power and speed as Sue Ellen, and they both have that great, calm disposition and an exceptional mind. It is like they have the body of Michael Jordan but the mind of a mule, in terms of calmness. They never waste energy on nervousness, so they always have energy left to play a second chukker. That is what separates the good horses from the great horses.’” Polo Players Edition, June 2006, pg. 17 – “Other notable seniors (in the 2006 U.S. Open.) are Sue Ellen, 16, played by Gonazalo Pieres, Jr.” PPEd, May, 2006, pg. 17, Aging Gracefully – “Just look at some of the older horses still playing in high goal; Beetle Juice, Sue Ellen, Manuel, Taboo, Carla, Maple Leaf, Chantilly, Sea Breeze, Garantia, Palomo and I’m sure there are a few more. They are the warhorses of the sport and deserve all the respect in the world for what they have accomplished and what they will accomplish in the future.”
